Bjarg housing foundation was established by BSRB and the Icelandic Confederation of Labour (ASÍ) in December 2016. It was established to ensure that families with low income, members of a union within BSRB and ASÍ, had access to housing with an affordable and long-term rent. Bjarg is a non-profit organization.
The system is built on a Scandinavian model and reflects the ideology that everyone regardless of income or social statues has the right to affordable housing.
The aim is to build more than 1300 apartments in various places in Iceland, in Reykjavik, Akranres, Akureyri, Þorlákshöfn, Garðabær and Hafnarfjörður to name a few. The first apartments were ready in 2019 as planed and the aim is to continue building apartment buildings for the forseeable future and rent out new apartments monthly.
